Where is the catch?
There isn't one, and the honest answer is that there is no business model either. No company behind this, no investors waiting for a return, no payroll. They are programs I needed, and keeping them going costs time, not money.
What does happen is that the more people use them, the harder they are to hold up: a certificate that expires, a system that changes its rules, a bug that only shows on a machine that is not mine. If you want to help keep them safe, current and free, further down is how.
Which also means I owe you nothing: no contract, no guaranteed support. Just plenty of goodwill and the whole source published, under a licence that lets anyone continue it if this ends. And even if it does end, what is yours stays exportable, portable and within your reach. It is the only guarantee I can give, and it outlasts a subscription.
That is why the source is open
Not as a selling point. It is what makes everything above checkable: anyone can read whether there is telemetry, whether anything leaves the machine, or what gets written to disk, instead of taking this page at its word.
If you want to give something back
You do not have to. If you feel like it anyway, there are ways that cost nothing and help more.
How to supportQuestions
Are they really free?
Yes, every one of them, in full, with no paid tier and nothing locked. They install from the Microsoft Store, with Homebrew, with winget or straight from GitHub, and none of them asks for an account.
Will they become paid later?
The source is published under the GPL and the AGPL. Even if I ever wanted to charge for something new, what exists today stays free and anyone can continue it. That cannot be undone.
Do you sell my data?
There is no data to sell. Nothing is collected: no telemetry, no analytics, no identifiers. Whatever each application keeps lives on your disk and stays there.
What happens if you stop maintaining them?
What you have installed keeps working. The source and its history are public, so anyone can continue it, and what they store are ordinary files on your machine, readable without the application.
